MWD Donation - Nov

A special "Thanks" to the VFW Post 9914 in Highland for another donation of $1000.00 to be applied to the restoration of the Michigan War Dog Memorial. I was unavailable to receive the donation last week, but my wife and partner Barb Weitlauf was available to receive the check. Over the past three years the VFW has been a solid supporter of the MWDM. It's greatly appreciated.

Salute to Vietnam Veterans in Lansing - October

This past Thursday 22 Veterans went to Lansing to take part in a special ceremony spearheaded by Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kowall. This event was a Welcome & Thank You Celebration for Michigan Vietnam Era Veterans and their families. There were people on board to help with VA matters, The Michigan War Dog Memorial Group was represented as well as others. There was a pinning ceremony where each Veteran who served during the Vietnam Era received a pin and were thanked for their service and officially welcomed home. There was music, food and a great amount of fellowship among the veterans and their families.

Sponsored by the Carls Family YMCA , the Veterans and their families were able to ride in comfort and visit among themselves while Larry Ray provided the bus from Hillside Chauffeured Services. Ray was willing to help out because he said we need to help care for the Veterans. Ray operates a local transportation company in Milford.

The Carls Family YMCA has a robust Veterans group that gets together to play pickle ball, work out in the wellness center and some take personal training. For Fred Troke, 82 years young, he says " coming to the Y is the best part of his day.
The Carls Family YMCA preschool enrichment class made a thank you poster and wished our Veterans well as they were ready to leave.

This event was organized by William Brown, Carls Family YMCA Veterans and First Responder Advocate. Brown indicated it was a great fall day to travel to Lansing and be with others who also served. Brown, a retired Marine is a member of the Carls Family YMCA Board. and is always eager to bring programs and services to the Veterans at the Y.

Milford Parade - July 4

LCPL Michael Leibler came home on leave this 4th of July weekend. Only his sister and brother in law knew about his coming home, so Joseph Salvia had LCPL Michael Leibler march in the Milford, Michigan 4th of July Parade, carrying the American Flag with the AmVet Post 2006.

When we got to the intersection of Main Street and Liberty, we stopped. LCPL Leiblerís family including Grandma Pat, Grandpa Ken, Mom Tammy, his Dad, and Great Grandpa were surprised when they noticed who was carrying the American Flag. A very happy 4th of July reunion was had by the Leibler family.

Joseph Salvia assumed the responsibility of carrying the Colors and onward in the 4th of July Parade we went on, leaving the young LCPL with his very happy family to celebrate our Nationís Day of Independence.

4th of July Celebration in Milford

On a beautiful July evening the Motor City Brass Band presented their annual patriotic concert at the new Lafontaine Amphitheater in Central Park. The opening ceremony featured a joint Color Guard consisting of veterans from American Legion Post 216, VFW Post 9914, and American Veterans Post 2006.

The overflow audience enjoyed songs and marches from all eras and conflicts that highlighted and honored the contributions of all Americans. A special tribute was given to VFW Post Commander Tom Oltesvig who left high school early to serve in Vietnam, and upon return received his diploma.

At the end of the performance all veterans in the audience were invited down front as the band and vocalist presented a rousing rendition of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA." Thanks to all who coordinated and planned this great event.
